Our Top 5 Public Health Resources

Updated: May 26, 2020

Founded by the American Public Health Association, National Public Health Week seeks to raise awareness about important health issues affecting the public at large. Information is powerful and, through the research of medical professionals, much of the population can remain protected from various diseases, conditions and other threats to health.

Over the years, the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater St. Louis has worked to build a library of resources, using the insights of our skilled care team of physicians, nurses, social workers, and more. In no particular order, here are some other useful resources to check for information about important public health issues:

National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO)

The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) is a leading source of information on current and future issues impacting hospice providers, patients, and their families. The Visiting Nurse Association is a proud member of the NHPCO and is proud to participate in various advocacy-related events and/or campaigns hosted by this organization in the hopes of making more tools and resources available for hospice providers to improve care for their patients.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC)

Prevention is a key component of maintaining good health and as the nation’s “health protection agency,” the Center for Disease Control is centered around that idea. Operating as a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the CDC specializes in studying various diseases and conditions that affect the public and delivers vital facts, statistics and other information that help guide the nation in times of crisis.

World Health Organization (WHO)

The World Health Organization’s primary goal is to promote global health by advocating for universal health coverage and providing valuable information that encourages better health and well-being across humanity. A large part of the WHO’s work is spreading awareness about the social barriers and other social determinants that may impact people’s access to health, and sharing information on how to combat those obstacles.

St. Louis Department of Health

The St. Louis Department of Health offers a collection of helpful resources to guide St. Louis city residents through the various public health services and tools available to them. People can find a large archive of reports with statistics and other useful information revealing the city’s current standing on a wide range of health topics, ranging from obesity to environmental health.

Saint Louis County Department of Public Health

The Saint Louis County Department of Public Health gathers news, information, services, and resources for county citizens to utilize. Though staying informed about worldwide health issues is necessary, it can be especially beneficial to have a credible local source like this to have to find information that specifically and most immediately affects communities.

These are only some of the many resources that offer valuable, trusted information on public health topics.
