Katelyn Viola is the Vaccination and Wellness Coordinator at Visiting Nurse Association of Greater St. Louis (VNA), a position she has been in since March 2020.
Prior to working for VNA, Katelyn worked in telecommunications as a coordinator, aiding in the installation of circuits for wi-fi and telephones. The coordination aspect of this role prepared her for responsibilities at VNA as she connects clients with our nursing team to coordinate vaccination clinics and establish necessary operational procedures.
The majority of the clinics she schedules are on-site for corporations and companies, though she also coordinates a small number of community sites for the public. “There’s a lot more that goes into scheduling a clinic than what I was used to,” says Katelyn. “Some clinics are very large and have multiple contacts, so you want to make sure everyone’s on the same page, which takes a little bit of time.”
She first discovered VNA when she heard about the open position. “I was interested in the healthcare field, and after doing the interview, I realized this is the type of organization that I think I would enjoy being a part of,” says Katelyn. “You can tell that the people here really care about their work and the well-being of others, and I wanted to be a part of that community and team.”
The communal aspect of the position is her favorite part of working at VNA, which includes building relationships with clients. Katelyn looks forward to the fall as VNA clinics begin to launch. It’s the busiest time of year for her, so she meets a lot of people and enjoys witnessing the fruits of her labor. “I like knowing I have a hand in helping others. It gives a satisfactory element to the job!”
The Wellness and Vaccinations program goes beyond offering flu vaccine by providing blood pressure readings, BMI assessments and A1C testing along with other immunizations such as hepatitis A and B, pneumonia, TB and shingles. Katelyn ensures all demands can be met through our clinics. She also helps nurses provide school readiness vaccination clinics for children in kindergarten through their senior year of high school. There are new protocols for these programs in place in response to COVID-19, so she is working hard to manage the safely precautions put in place.
